On Wednesday, November 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the winners of the Women’s World Cup at his home in New Delhi. Sticking to his practice of honoring and hearing from successful athletes, PM Modi greeted Harmanpreet Kaur and the Indian women’s cricket team that evening. Under Harmanpreet’s guidance, India made history on Sunday by becoming the first Indian team to win the Women’s World Cup. After years of disappointment, India triumphed in Navi Mumbai against South Africa, winning by 52 runs in a thrilling match. Unlike during the 2023 men’s World Cup final where he was present, PM Modi was not at the women’s final. Nevertheless, he celebrated the significant victory with millions of fans, expressing his sincere admiration for Harmanpreet and her teammates.
PM Modi has shown strong support for sports over the years. He has welcomed Olympic champions, chess talents, and Paralympic winners, always making time to meet and inspire India's athletes. The gathering at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg started around 6 PM and lasted a few hours. The team and head coach Amol Mazumdar arrived in Delhi on a flight from Mumbai on Tuesday evening. The Indian women's team, along with their support staff, got a warm reception at the Taj Palace Hotel, where they were showered with rose petals upon their arrival. The festivities continued inside as Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav, and Sneh Rana danced to lively dhol music, encouraged by hotel employees and spectators. The team traveled to Delhi on a special Star Air charter flight, and security was increased in the city in anticipation of their arrival, as reported by PTI. Police conducted thorough checks on the team bus and the routes nearby.

It is yet to be decided if there will be a victory celebration parade for the team in the upcoming days. India celebrated their win in Navi Mumbai with family and friends after the post-match award ceremony. Captain Harmanpreet, top batter Jemimah Rodrigues, and Radha Yadav had their parents join them in the celebrations on the field. A touching moment occurred when Harmanpreet ran to her father after making the catch that secured the World Cup victory for India. The Indian players also paid tribute to past legends like Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra, and Jhulan Goswami, inviting them to lift the trophy and join in the celebratory lap at DY Patil Stadium. Head coach Amol Mazumdar received a hero’s welcome when he returned home on Monday before rejoining the team for the journey to Delhi. Neighbors, mainly women, formed a guard of honor, raising bats to celebrate the former cricketer, who excelled in first-class cricket.
