Ahmedabad to get India's First Vertical 16-Storey Railway Station

Ahmedabad is about to see a big change in urban transportation with the building of India's first 16-story train station, a project that is set to change how people travel through one of Gujarat's busiest areas. This redevelopment is designed as a fully integrated complex that combines regular trains, the new Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, metro services, and bus transport all in one tall building. This represents a major change from the typical low-level station style to a more condensed, transit-focused design that is common in big cities around the world. The station will be built with better connections, modern waiting areas, and shopping options, aiming to provide a more efficient and smoother travel experience when it is finished. The new station will be built above platforms 10, 11, and 12 of the current Kalupur train station, making it India's first vertical transportation hub of this size. The 16-story design will include areas for passengers, waiting lounges, shopping spaces, offices, and significant intermodal links. The "vertical station design" uses height instead of spreading out horizontally to accommodate increasing foot traffic and limited city space.
A main goal of this project is to create smooth connectivity. The facility will connect directly to the Kalupur Metro Station, allowing easy transfers between metro, high-speed trains, regular trains, and buses. The plan includes wider roads for easier access, better bus connections, and elevated areas for passengers to move around. The intention is to minimize the hassle for travelers coming from various locations in the city or nearby regions. The station will play a crucial role in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, which is India’s first bullet-train line. Once it starts running, high-speed trains are expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to about two hours, compared to the 7-8 hours needed by road or regular train. The Ahmedabad hub will serve as a major terminal, providing quick access to metro lines and regular rail services.
Plans show a modern station with improved waiting areas, better wayfinding systems, accessible entrances and exits, enhanced waiting rooms, and integrated shopping spaces. Designated parking spots and specific pathways for passengers are expected to help manage crowds more efficiently. The overall layout is meant to make movement easier and lessen congestion during busy times. According to reports, the expected completion date is July 2027. If everything goes according to plan, the project could greatly improve Ahmedabad's connectivity and assist with the launch of the bullet train. Additionally, it may inspire similar transport hubs in other large cities as rail travel adapts to the increasing need for urban mobility.
