Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that India is getting ready to put in a bid for the 2036 Olympics. This decision is based on its previous successful experiences hosting big international events such as the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and the Hockey World Cup. Additionally, India will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, which will help in improving sports facilities and demonstrate what India can achieve. While giving a speech online during the opening ceremony of the 72nd National Volleyball Championship in Varanasi, PM Modi mentioned that several cities have hosted over 20 international events in the last ten years, including the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, and various chess tournaments. He also mentioned that the Commonwealth Games of 2030 will take place in India.
India is in the process of preparing to submit a bid for the 2036 Olympics… Reports suggest that Ahmedabad aims to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, with an estimated budget ranging from Rs 34,700 crore to Rs 64,000 crore. The proposal includes the development of both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar together, aiming to offer top-notch facilities. Officials are in talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding this. PM Modi emphasized how India's sports environment is changing, stating that initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) are crucial in helping young athletes gain experience. He noted that the government is focused on enhancing infrastructure and financial support for sports.
“The development of the sports environment in India today is due to the TOPS initiative,” he added, highlighting that the country has successfully organized over 20 international sporting events in the last ten years. While addressing the players at the national volleyball competition, PM Modi praised teams from 28 states, calling their participation a true example of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’. He explained that volleyball represents balance, teamwork, and determination, relating these qualities to India’s growth journey. “Our success relies on working together, trust, and being well-prepared. We can only succeed when everyone does their part. Our country is making progress in the same way,” he stated. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who also spoke at the event, remarked, “In the past 11 years, we have witnessed the development of the entire country. Every Indian is reaping the benefits of the modern infrastructure the Prime Minister has envisioned. All Indians are benefitting from government welfare programs and rising above the poverty line. ” He added that sports are no longer viewed as just a wasted effort; instead, they are now seen as a route to overall development.
