As early signs show a significant rise for the BJP in West Bengal, attention has turned to who might be the next Chief Minister of the state. The BJP is leading in almost 200 seats, whereas the TMC seems to be lagging near the 100-seat count. Unlike some other states, the BJP has not made an official announcement regarding its candidate for Chief Minister in West Bengal. However, with the party heading towards a clear win, various leaders are being talked about as potential candidates based on their political clout and organizational strength.
Suvendu Adhikari is presently the most recognized BJP figure in the political arena of West Bengal and serves as the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. His political importance is derived from his strong support network in areas like East Midnapore and his effectiveness in gathering backing in crucial regions. He was previously a close associate of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while being a part of the Trinamool Congress and held significant ministerial roles in the state administration. Nonetheless, prior to the 2021 Assembly elections, he left the TMC to join the BJP, marking a notable political departure in recent Bengal history. The clash between Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee is a key rivalry in the state’s political scene, with both leaders often facing off against each other. This direct opposition to Mamata’s leadership is a major reason why Suvendu is regarded as the BJP’s strongest candidate for Chief Minister in Bengal.
Dilip Ghosh is a senior leader in the BJP and a former state president who played a crucial role in increasing the party’s influence in West Bengal. During his leadership, the BJP significantly enhanced its organizational framework and became a formidable opposition force, especially in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Renowned for his combative political approach and outreach at the grassroots level, he continues to be a significant veteran figure in the party, even though he no longer holds the state presidency. Shamik Bhattacharya, the current president of the West Bengal BJP, represents the organizational leadership within the party in the state. His main focus is on internal reorganization, managing polling booths, and crafting election strategies. He is viewed more as a strategist and administrator than as a prominent electoral figure.
Agnimitra Paul, the BJP MLA from Asansol South and national spokesperson, is an up-and-coming leader in the party's Bengal wing. Previously a fashion designer, she has gained attention through national media appearances and is often highlighted as part of the BJP's initiative to encourage women leaders in the state. While she may not be a frontrunner for Chief Minister, she is seen as a rising political figure. Shankar Ghosh, the BJP MLA from Siliguri, is a significant regional leader from North Bengal. He has been actively involved in local organization and mobilization efforts in that area. His influence is more regional rather than statewide, but he is included in the wider leadership group that is being monitored for future positions within the party.
