Wikipedia is at war with a photographer and why?
Well, apparently, the photographer has claimed that the selfie of a black macaque from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in Wikipedia is his. However, the free encyclopedia has shot down its claims, defending that none, but the monkey, has a copyright on the pic since he clicked it.
"This file is in the public domain because as the work of a non-human animal, it has no human author in whom copyright is vested," a message on Wikipedia site read.
In 2011, the photographer David Slater was out shooting crested black macaques when one of the endangered monkeys took away his camera and shot hundreds of pictures. Among those, were some mind-bowing images, including a selfie of the macaque, that bagged headlines.
Slater is now planning to sue Wikimedia, owner of Wikipedia, for using the photo on its site without permission, media reports said.
"I own the photo but because the monkey pressed the trigger and took the photo, they are claiming the monkey owns the copyright," Slater was quoted as saying.
According to him, Wikimedia's decision to include the image in their database has resulted in a loss of earnings. The company could have to shell out $30,000 on statutory damages.
