Tripura Lifts AFSPA from State

The cabinet of the government of Tripura has decided to lift the Armed Forces Special Power Act from the state, which was imposed on February 16, 1997 following uncertainty in the state by extremists.

The controversial AFSPA, gives extended powers to the Armed Forces in controlling the situation and the right of the civilians would be tamed in practical.

The chief Minister of the state, Manik Sarkar, and his council of ministers have decided to repel the act from the state as the situation is peaceful in the state.

The act still exists in several Nort-Eastern states of the Indian Union and in the state of Jammu and Kashmir over the insurgency and terrorism problems.
