As Sachin Tendulkar walked back to the pavilion after getting caught at slip at 74, the Wankhede reverberated in silence.
Soon after he walked passed the boundary, he turned and raised his bat in one hand and helmet in other, knowing that as India takes to lunch at 282 for 3, he might never get to bat for his country again.
His departure from the wicket was anticlimatic as excited spectators expected the Master Blaster to finish his career with one final century. But that wasn't to happen.
It wasn't an easy decision for Umpire Richard Kettleborough who went through replays, with hands on his knees, probably hoping that the ball hasn't brushed through Tendulkar's sleeve. But, alas, his best hopes were laid to rest as the third umpire blinked an “out”. And the crowd went frenzy.
Twenty-six runs short of what would have been his 52nd Test century, and his 101st in all international cricket, Tendulkar was sent back to pavilion for the final time.
The fans, who moments ago were screaming and waving flags, stood in silence and the broke into an applause, giving a standing ovation as Tendulkar took to his heels and walked back to the pavilion. History over!
