Following the arrest of Devyani Khobragade, the Indian diplomat posted at the Indian Mission in New York, the Indian government has registered a strong protest with the US government.
India's Foreign secretary Sujatha Singh summoned American ambassador Nancy Powell to the South Block on Friday to protest the arrest of the diplomat on visa fraud charges.
Thirtynine-year-old Khobragade was arrested on Thursday for visa fraud charges relating to a domestic worker, who was brought from India and was allegedly being underpaid and exploited. If the charges are proves against Khobragade, she could be punished with a sentences of upto ten years. On Friday Khobragade was released on bail after signing a bail bond of $250,000. US judge Debra Freeman heard her bail plea in a Manhattan federal court.
