Even as the country battles to deal with Jammu & Kashmir flood, another Indian state is now running the risk of a heavy deluge.
Incessant downpour since today morning has throw life out of gear in its largest city of Guwahati. As water-logged most parts of the city, administrators ordered closure of all schools and colleges.
The rain-fed Bharalu river has already deluged parts of Anil Nagar, Tarun Nagar, National Highway 37, arterial GS and GNB roads.
Many vehicles got stranded on the water-logged roads. A few that went off the roads caused great trouble to the office goers and school children.
In view of the rising risk of another flood, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration ordered all government and private educational institutions to be closed. Not just that, the administration has warned people staying in landslide-prone areas to relocate to a safer haven for now.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the district administration to provide instant relief to the people in distress.
Control rooms have been set up at the offices of the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration, the Chief Minister's Secretariat and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to monitor and coordinate the rescue and relief operations round the clock, said a spokesman of the chief minister's office (CMO).
For assistance, call on 0361-2733052; 0361-2237042 and 8811007000.
Forecasting no let up in the rainfall in the next two days, the MeT office here said the south-west monsoon has been active over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya since
yesterday.
