The Sikh community in Canada decided to offer services as a support to the Syrian refugees who are expected to arrive over the coming months. According to reports from CBC News, the Sikhs in Lower Mainland offered help with schooling, housing, food and clothing to the Syrian refugees arriving Canada.
Surrey Centre MP, Randeep Sarai, said, "The Sikh community themselves have come to Canada in many different ways from the early 1900s and onwards."
"Welcoming others, newcomers, was part of their life, whether they (Canadian people) knew them or not. Whether immigrants came from India, or whether they were refugees in tumultuous times during the '80s, the Sikh way, the Canadian way, was always to give them a home, help them at the temple and help feed them," Sarai said.
As per the estimation from Government officials, around 2,500 Syrian refugees are expected to land in the region within coming weeks. The ongoing civil war has made these refugees leave Syria. Few Sikh organizations expressed a desire to help the refugees in resettling.
Services include free meals, free tuition for one year for 1,000 students at Khalsa School, clothing and blankets for 2,000 refugees from many gurdwaras, transportation and medical services. The Khalsa School in Surrey is offering education the children of Syrian refugees.
Kamalpreet Bagga, the school principal, said, "We even have several teachers who speak Arabic, and we will do whatever we can to help the new students feel welcome." By the New Year, the federal government plans to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada.
