An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude hit northeastern India in the early Monday morning at around 4:36 am. The disaster killed at least six persons and injured 100 in Manipur. Large scale damage was recorded in Imphal with huge cracks reported in many houses, besides walls of many building collapsing.

The Indian Meteorological department indicates that the epicentre was in Tamenglong district, Manipur. According to the officials from the state government, the epicentre was at Noney village Tamenglong, which is nearly 35 kms away from Imphal. TOI quoted Principal Secretary Suresh Babu as saying that the situation is being assessed by the government at the same time providing required help to victims.

A tweet from PM Modi said that instructions were given to an NDRF team to move to earthquake affected areas from Guwahati. PM Modi tweeted that, "Spoke to Rajnath ji, who is in Assam, on the situation arising due to the earthquake & asked him to oversee the situation." Another tweet from the PM’s office said that,” PM Modi spoke to Arunachal Pradesh CM Shri Nabam Tuki.

Modi tweeted about Union home minister Rajnath Singh’s presence in Guwahati. Mr Singh felt the earthquake In India’s highest Zone V earthquake risk zone.

Tremours were reported from states like Assam, West Bengal, Manipur, Jharkhand and Bihar. Posts from few people in social networking media revealed that cracks appeared on many of the buildings. Women's market building, which is a famous one in Imphal, was also damaged. The situation was assessed by Works minister Ratan Khumujam today.

A Jamshedpur resident in Jharkhand, Sudhir Kumar, said, "I felt someone was waking me up. When I woke up, I felt it was a strong tremor."

No information yet from the officials from the disaster management department of the State. People were seen running out of homes in Guwahati towards open spaces.
