The Haryana Government has announced the decision to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram and Mewat, its neighboring district, as Nuh. An official spokesman said that the name change decision of Gurgaon is on the basis of the representations taken from various forums.
According to the spokesman, Haryana is mentioned in the Bhagwat Gita as a historic land, where as Gurgaon had been the center of learning. It is the place where Guru Dronacharya offered education to the Pandavas and Kauras. The name of the town was derived from Guru Dronacharya. His students, the Pandavas, gave the village to their guru as “gurudakshina” and thus, it is named as Gurugram. But the name got distorted to Gurgaon in the course of time. Meanwhile, people of that area had been demanding for name change from a long time.
He said, Mewat is a cultural and geographical unit. It is even spread to adjoining States of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Mewat district’s headquarters is at Nuh town and thus, people had been demanding for name change.
The spokesperson said that the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar gave approval to name changes. The proposal would now be forwarded for approval to the Government of India. Name changes will come into affect following a Gazette Notification. A councilors committee sent a proposal concerning this to the government.
Mixed reactions have evoked because of renaming. According to Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash, renaming could hamper the administrative work.
