Sharp Eyes on Election funds from NRIs

As Punjab is heading for the state elections, which is most likely be a triangular election between AAP, BJP-SAD and Congress.

Punjab’s most economical region is Doaba, upon which security agencies have a sharp eye, because of that the majority of the income of this region is generated from the fairly large NRI population.

Every second family in Doaba region has a member who is working in some other country.

After that, several NGO’s not only in that region, but in the whole state, were under the scanner of the Financial Intelligence Unit and Income Tax authorities.

According to news agencies the money flow is high from USA, Canada, UK and Europe. And it is also suspected that politicians, who have stored funds aboard are instructing their friends or supporters there to send the money back into NGOs in the state.

After the demonetization there have been a huge shortage of cash flow in political parties, at this time it is highly anticipated that attempts can be made to bring the money back in a bid to fund the election campaigns.

Officials have suspected that there will be a lot of NRI funding during these election campaigns, so security agencies will keep a close watch upon NGOs, as it is suspected through which huge amount of money will be routed.

According to sources the money flow will increase at the time of elections and will create a similar scenario of previous state elections.

An FIU officer informed that lot of money from NRIs will be added to political campaigns.

During the time of elections, most of these NRIs come back to Punjab not only to vote, but also to support funding for a political party.

Officials also said that three political parties SAD-BJP, Congress and AAP will be benefited from these funds.

While AAP is attracting a lot of NRI volunteers for its election campaign particularly the youth.

Punjab state police had said that they are keeping a close eye on money flowing into the region and additional forces have been deployed in Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Mohali airports.

The particular issue was also discussed with the Election comity.
