A day after declaring the closure of Vedanta group's copper plant in Tuticorin, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday canceled the land assigned to Sterlite for expansion.
On Monday, the state government ordered state Pollution Control Board to seal and permanently shut down sterlite plant following the raging protests over pollution concerns during which in police firing about 13 people were killed.
Shortly after the issue of the government order, Tuticorn district authority sealed the land site of copper smelter unit and affixed the order at the main gate.
Reacting to the closure, Vedanta Ltd stated it as unfortunate and would determine the forthcoming course of action after perusing the development.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minsiter K. Palaniswami said the government has issued the government order in deference to the sentiments of the people.
