Smriti Irani Taunts Deepika Padukone for Her Visit to the JNU

Deepika Padukone is being criticized by several members of the ruling BJP for her visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) this week and the latest BJP leader to attack Deepika Padukone is Union Minister Smriti Irani.

Smriti Irani said on Thursday that the actor had made her political affiliation known in 2011 that she extends her support to the Congress party. Deepika Padukone has been receiving severe criticism from the ruling BJP as well as a section of social media users since had made a visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Ms Irani said,” I think that anybody who has read the news knew where you are going to stand… knew that you are standing with people who celebrate every time a CRPF jawan is killed,” in an event that is organized by The New Indian Express in Chennai.

She added saying that, “I would rather know what her (Deepika Padukone's) political affiliation is than not know... I can't deny her that right that she will stand next to people who will beat up other girls who don't see eye-to-eye ideologically in private parts. That's her freedom (sic)."

Smriti Irani said that the actor Deepika Padukone had made her political affiliation known that she extends her support for the Congress party, in 2011 as she referred to a video that was share by critics in which Deepika Padukone backs Rahul Gandhi for the Prime Minister. It is her right so as to stand next to people who say “Bharat tere tukde honge”, said Smriti Irani.


Deepika Padukone has visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday evening as she was in Delhi for promoting her film Chhapaak. She has seen standing silently along with the students where as there has been an image where in she is seen with folded hands before Aishe Gosh, the student leader of JNU who has been wounded badly in the masked mob attack on Sunday.

The move made by the actor as a solidarity with students has raised the bars of praise as well as criticism. There have been calls for boycotting her film. Tajinder Bagga, a BJP leader has urged people to boycott the film.

The Union Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that not only artistes but any common man can express his/her opinion and can go anywhere to express it and there cannot be any objection.
