Indian Drug Regulator approved Zydus Cadila's coronavirus DNA vaccine of three-dose for emergency use in adults and children above the age of 12 years. This happens to be the sixth vaccine available in the country for use. Zydus Cadila informed that they are in plans to manufacture 100-120 million doses of ZyCoV-D per year and the stockpile of the vaccine commenced recently. Cadila Healthcare Ltd applied for emergency use authorization in India on July 1st and the efficacy rate is said to be 66.6 percent after the trials are conducted on 28,000 volunteers across the country. ZyCoV-D is the first plasmid DNA vaccine in the world for coronavirus. The vaccine is expected to be launched in September and there would be a duration of 28 days between each slot.

ZyCoV-D uses genetic material from the virus and instructs DNA or RNA to make a specific protein that the immune system responds to. ZyCoV-D was developed by the Department of Biotechnology along with Cadila Healthcare Ltd. This is the second home-grown vaccination to get emergency authorization use after Covaxin that is manufactured by Bharat Biotech. The drugmaker announced that the vaccination is quite effective against the Delta variant and others. The vaccine can be given using a needle-free applicator and no traditional syringes are recommended.
