Leaving many in a huge surprise, Navjot Singh Sidhu submitted his resignation days after Amarinder Singh has been replaced as the Chief Minister of Punjab. Navjot Singh Sidhu wrote to Sonia Gandhi in a letter which said "The collapse of a man's character stems from the compromise corner. I can never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab. Therefore, I hereby resign as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. I will continue to serve the Congress,". Punjab is heading for polls soon and the resignation of Navjot Singh Sidhu came as a rude shock to Congress.

The Gandhis were warned about the same but it was Priyanka Gandhi who pushed Navjot Singh Sidhu's name for the President of Congress Chief of Punjab. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are yet to make a statement and they are currently in Shimla. The new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi made changes to the cabinet of the state. Navjot Singh Sidhu was not consulted before making some of the key decisions after which he decided to step down from the post of Congress Chief. Prominent faces like Kanhaiya Kumar and Jignesh Mewani joined the party but Congress received a shock through the move of Navjot Singh Sidhu.
