Navjot Singh Sidhu Steps Down as Punjab Congress Chief

Congress party suffered a massive debacle in the recent Assembly polls in the country. Congress President Sonia Gandhi took a call and sacked the Chiefs of all the five states. Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Congress Chief of Punjab resigned for his post today and announced it to the media. Navjot Singh Sidhu took twitter saying "As desired by the Congress President I have sent my resignation". He sent the copy of his resignation letter to Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi. Congress official spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that the party sought the resignations of the chiefs of the states. Sonia Gandhi is said to be keen to finalize new names for the PCC Chiefs for the states Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur.

Navjot Singh Sidhu interacted with the media for the first time after the defeat and he lauded the people of Punjab for voting for Aam Admi Party. "The voice of the people is the voice of God. We have to understand with humility and respect the decision of the people" told Navjot Singh Sidhu. Congress has been the major contender in Punjab polls but the party suffered a major defeat. AAP bagged 92 seats out of the 117 in the state. Congress Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi lost in both the constituencies. Sidhu also lost from Amritsar East to Jeevanjyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by a margin of over 6,000 votes.
