Former cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has been sentenced one-year imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1000 in a road rage case that took place in 1988. The accident killed a 65-year-old man and the Supreme Court announced its verdict yesterday. The top court sentenced one year of rigorous imprisonment for Navjot Singh Sidhu apart from the fine. Navjot Singh Sidhu soon responded through twitter saying "Will submit to the majesty of law". Before this, Sidhu held a protest against inflation in Patiala by sitting on an elephant and he was holding a banner that said "Elephant rise in the prices".

The family of Gurnam Singh filed a plea for a review after the judgement in 2018 left Sidhu with a fine. Sidhu was an international cricketer at the time when the accident took place. The Supreme Court said that Sidhu can't plead ignorance in this aspect. The court also said that a severe sentence cannot be passed in this case. When the media approached him, Sidhu preferred not to comment. As per the prosecution, Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Sandhu were present in the vehicle when the accident took place. The cops claim that Gurnam Singh was beaten by Navjot Singh Sidhu after he asked Sidhu to give way. Navjot Singh Sidhu later fled from the spot. The victim was declared dead at the hospital told the cops.

Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sandhu have been acquitted by the trial court in September 1999. The Punjab and Haryana High Court reversed the order in December 2006 and the duo was convicted. Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced three years imprisonment. Navjot Singh Sidhu challenged the same in the Supreme Court and the apex court now sentenced one year imprisonment for Sidhu.
