Residents of Delhi and surrounding regions awoke to heavy smog on Saturday, with the air quality nearing the "severe" level. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) indicated that the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 8 am was measured at 390, placing it in the "very poor" range. Nonetheless, numerous areas in the national capital recorded air quality classified as severe. Areas like Anand Vihar (AQI- 435), Burari Crossing (AQI- 415), Chandni Chowk (AQI- 419), Ghazipur (AQI- 435), Jahangirpuri (AQI- 442), RK Puram (AQI- 404), and Rohini (AQI- 436) were among them. A combination of smog and light fog led to reduced visibility in various sections of the national capital early Saturday morning. The categories for AQI are as follows: 0-50 is 'good,' 51-100 is 'satisfactory,' 101-200 is 'moderate,' 201-300 is 'poor,' 301-400 is 'very poor,' and 401-500 is 'severe.' The CPCB explains that these categories represent pollution levels and their related health impacts.

Hazardous AQI levels are becoming more frequent in different areas of Delhi during the winter months. The overall AQI for Saturday, categorized as "very poor," poses a threat of respiratory problems even for those in good health if exposed for extended durations. In a message on X, the Delhi Airport informed that all flights were operating normally at that time. The statement included, "Low visibility procedures are being carried out at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are currently normal. Passengers should check with their airline for updated flight details." On Friday, a thick layer of smog also covered Delhi, with an AQI of 386. Reports indicated significant haze in places like Ghazipur and Anand Vihar, where visibility was critically low. Although there have been slight improvements in recent weeks, large areas of the capital continue to be shrouded in dense and harmful smog. The deteriorating air quality has led to heated exchanges between political parties.
