Union Home Minister Amit Shah has put forth a contentious law in Lok Sabha which allows for the removal of the Prime Minister and state Chief Ministers if they are imprisoned for 30 days, regardless of whether they have been found guilty of a crime. The Opposition has expressed their disapproval of the amendment to the Constitution, calling it "harsh" and accusing the ruling BJP of attempting to transform the nation into a "police state." Senior Congress figure and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra commented, "I view this as entirely oppressive as it contradicts fundamental principles. To label it as an anti-corruption measure is simply misleading the public." She further stated, "In the future, any Chief Minister could face charges, be jailed for 30 days without a conviction, and lose their position. This is deeply anti-constitutional, undemocratic, and truly regrettable."

Hyderabad MP and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that the BJP administration is aiming to create a "police state." He asserted, "This legislation is against the Constitution. Who is going to arrest the Prime Minister?... Overall, the BJP wants to transform our nation into a police state through such legislation. We will resist these efforts... The BJP seems to forget that power does not last forever." Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee remarked that the government is "only focused on gaining power, wealth, and control without being accountable." He stated on X, "We strongly denounce this oppressive mindset and oppose the introduction of this severe constitutional amendment bill." Among the BJP MPs in favor of the Bill is Manan Kumar Mishra, who accused the Opposition of attempting to distract the public. He stated, "The government is presenting a significant bill that prevents those who have been incarcerated for over 30 days from holding ministerial roles. There is nothing more critical than this, yet the Opposition seeks to hinder the Parliament."
