Modi government is planning to change the iconic courts of Madras and Bombay may soon undergo for nomenclature through Parliament Act.

The law Ministry has started working on a bill to change the names with related to present name of the city. There is a demand for change the names with current names Bombay and Chennai. after the metros were rechristened in the 1990s.

The proposal of the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry is to bring a bill to change the names of two high courts which were established in n the 1860s under the Indian High Court Act, 1861.

The Bombay high court was opened on August 14 1862.The High court today has three benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad and Goa.

Beside these two changes, there are demands to change the names of courts like Calcutta High court as Kolkata High court.

The Calcutta high court is one among the first high court of the three chartered high courts to be set up in India, along with the high courts of Bombay, Madras. It was formally opened on July 1, 1862.
