Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed a financial aid package worth Rs 1500 crore for Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, as the state continues to struggle with the severe consequences of continuous rainfall, flash floods, and landslides since 2023. This announcement was made during his trip to the hardest-hit locations, including Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu, after he flew over the areas and held an important review meeting in Kangra. Along with the comprehensive relief package, the Prime Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for each person injured due to rain-related incidents. Speaking to officials and local leaders after the aerial survey, PM Modi stated, “The suffering in Himachal Pradesh is the suffering of the whole nation. We will restore what has been lost and we will do it together. The Central Government is fully dedicated to assisting Himachal in this difficult time.” The money is meant to be used for immediate recovery, rebuilding essential infrastructure, and helping families impacted by displacement, death, or injury.

Just hours before the Prime Minister’s visit, Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu posted an emotional message on Facebook, expressing his welcome to the PM while revealing the extent of the destruction the state is facing. “This is a period of immense sadness and anguish,” he noted. “The pain of losing loved ones and the destruction of homes deeply affects the heart.” CM Sukhu highlighted that, beyond financial support, India must quickly rethink its approach to development in environmentally delicate mountainous regions. He urged the Prime Minister to start a national conversation on sustainable growth in the Himalayas given the challenges of climate change. “Should we keep our current development strategy in the Himalayas as it is? How can we safeguard our mountains, their beauty, and their resources?” Sukhu inquired. He also advocated for easing rules concerning forest land to help relocate displaced families and called for infrastructure planning that suited mountain ecosystems.

PM Modi arrived at Gaggal Airport at around 1.20 pm, where he was greeted by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, CM Sukhu, Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri, and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur. Senior BJP figures, including Union Minister JP Nadda, were also in attendance. Officials project that the total damage in the state has surpassed Rs 5,000 crore, with numerous casualties and thousands of homes destroyed or rendered unlivable. Vital infrastructure like roads, bridges, and power lines has experienced serious damage, particularly in isolated areas.
